Oxford is a working university city almost a thousand years old, and its colleges are the draw. Christ Church, with the hall that helped inspire the Harry Potter films, the Bodleian Library, the domed Radcliffe Camera and the Bridge of Sighs are all within a short walk of one another, and a punt on the Cherwell is an easy way to slow the afternoon down. Because your car is waiting, you are free to wander the covered market and the side streets without keeping an eye on a coach departure.

Blenheim Palace
A short drive north brings you to Blenheim Palace at Woodstock, one of the largest houses in England and the only non-royal, non-episcopal country house in the country to hold the title of palace. It was the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, set in more than two thousand acres of parkland landscaped by Capability Brown. The state rooms, the formal gardens and the grounds can fill as much of an afternoon as you like, and the drive between Oxford and Woodstock takes only around twenty minutes.
